I didn’t think I could love Mikey more until I saw him with braces.
The final designs for the Turtles in Seth Rogen’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem have been leaked online, giving us our best look at the film’s art style yet.
Several planned toy lines and marketing partnerships for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem have surfaced online over the past few weeks, giving us a glimpse of the Turtles’ final designs for the film, albeit from packshots that become blurry if you look too closely . Luckily, Twitter user lilbastard managed to find high quality versions of the renders used in the marketing, so we can finally see the designs in full detail.
Although the original images showing the Mutant Mayhem renderings were removed by Paramount following a copyright strike, Lilbastard created a fake movie poster using the renderings, which is still active at the time of writing and lets us take a look at the new Turtles. What is immediately striking is how bright and vibrant all four Turtles look, drawing immediate comparisons to Into the Spider-Verse.
First up is Leonardo, who has the most unchanged and classic looks of all the Turtles, is of normal height and weight, and has no additional additions to his gear or appearance, which fits perfectly with his role as a sensible leader. Raphael, on the other hand, sports the same durag look he’s sported since the Michael Bay movies, while also looking a little more muscular than the rest of the Turtles. He’s not absolutely massive here, though, unlike Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Next we have Donatello, once again made the lankiest of the bunch, outfitted with glasses, headphones and a phone to ensure we know he’s the smart one. It’s a bit of an exaggeration, but it’s worth noting that they seem to have removed the gap tooth look he had in the concept artwhich TMNT fans weren’t so keen on when it was first revealed.
Finally there is Mikey, who has been made much smaller and fatter than he normally is to emphasize that he is the youngest. Turtle mask renderings let us take a closer look at Mikey’s face, which shows us that he is actually wearing braces in this iteration. This is interesting since the Concept art released last year showed Leonardo wearing braces insteadwhich appears to have been given to Mikey.
In addition to the designs for the Turtles, Renderings for each of their weapons have also been shared online. TMNT fans will be happy to hear that Raph finally got his sais back after switching to Tonfas for Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Some other interesting details are that Mikey and Donnie have customized their weapons with decals, with Donnie even having a little reference to Sailor Moon.
