9 sunny, warm destinations for snowbirds

While some are excited about the winter season, others spend their time dreaming of sea views and warmer weather. If you’re the type of person who prefers sand to snow, these premier winter vacation spots are for you. From Florida to the many sanctuaries of Central America, these are our favorite snowbird destinations.

1. Nassau


Just a short flight from Miami, you are in the tropical paradise of the Bahamas. Lay on the beach, soak up the sun, enjoy the casino, or just do nothing but relax and soak up the warmth of the sun.

Culture and modern comfort make this place a great mix for a winter holiday.

2. Cancun


The Yucatan Peninsula is always a favorite winter getaway, and Cancun offers beautiful beach resorts where you can warm your toes in the sand in style. When not swimming in the stunning tropical waters, you can practice your yoga at one of the many beach retreats of your choice.

Cancun is served by over a dozen different airlines, so getting here is fairly easy.

3. Panama City


In addition to warm weather, Panama City offers great sights and flower-filled plazas to stroll through on warm winter nights. The historic Casa Viejo neighborhood overlooks downtown’s modern glass towers, providing an unusual mix of old and new in this seaside city of wonder.

The capital is nicknamed the “Crossroads of the World”, so rest assured: many airlines fly to Panama City.

4. Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic offers a wide variety of landscapes to explore while enjoying the warm winter days by the Caribbean Sea. Fancy a little outdoor adventure? Try to climb the highest mountain of all the Caribbean islands – Pico Duarte. At just over 10,000 feet, the view is breathtaking. Of course, if you don’t feel like scrambling away for the winter, there are plenty of beaches to lounge on at sea level.

With several international airports across the country, the DR, as travelers call it, offers easy access.

5. Barbados

One thing that not many people know is that Barbados is twinned with Charleston, South Carolina. In fact, many of Charleston’s early settlers share the same surnames as their distant relatives on the island, and many of the downtown streets share the same names.

6. Orlando


With over a dozen major theme parks in Orlando, it’s pretty hard to get bored. Although Orlando is not on the Florida coast, there are plenty of water parks to choose from. If you want to try an offbeat theme park, take a trip to Gatorland to see live alligators.

Orlando is a major destination city and flights here are easy to get.

7. Jamaica

Similar to Cancun, Jamaica’s all-inclusive resorts offer package deals that are hard to resist. If snorkeling, scuba diving or reggae music are high on your list, you can’t beat Jamaica.

Because Jamaica is a well-known tourist destination, cheap flights are usually available to one of Jamaica’s three international airports.

8. Roatan


Roatán, a tiny islet off the coast of Honduras, is quickly gaining popularity for its uncrowded beaches, excellent diving spots and whale shark migrations. The islanders of Roatán are friendly and easy-going, so plan a relaxing vacation here.

About 5 airlines fly to Roatan, but only a few flights per day. You must plan this trip in advance.

9. Bermuda

Bermuda is a British territory with beautiful pink sand beaches and a more sophisticated vibe. If golf is your sport, Bermuda offers some of the best, but plan to splurge — green fees don’t come cheap here.

Several airlines fly to Bermuda, but you need to keep a close eye on airfares here to get deals.
